GOLF LESSONS WITH BRYCE MAWHINNEY

Bryce Mawhinney Devonport Country Club

Bryce Mawhinney has accumulated over 40 years of experience, including 30 years as a PGA professional, playing representative golf for his club and province. His formative years were spent in New Zealand at the Manawatu Golf Club and the Paraparaumu Beach Golf Club, two vastly different golf courses.

His coaching experience has been shaped by renowned APGA professional Alex Mercer and NZPGA professional Mal Tongue, who have different styles and approaches to coaching. He has played mainly in Australasia, with a few tournaments in Asia, achieving a degree of success.

Since 2011, Bryce has focused on the coaching side of the profession, which has taken him to China, where he was based at the National Training Centre in Shandong province for five and a half years. He then moved to Australia, working at several clubs in the NSW/ACT region while playing on the PGA Legends Tour.

Coaching Approach

Bryce’s approach to coaching is fundamentals-based. He believes that without a strong foundation, golfers cannot progress to the best of their ability. Throughout his career, he has observed a lot of guesswork during lessons, which often does not reflect reality. Many players think they can improve by looking up information on the internet, but in Bryce’s opinion, this is far from the truth. It is difficult to assess one’s own golf swing, which is why a coach’s perspective is essential.

People often resist change and seek quick fixes which the internet provides. However, these quick fixes do not address the root of the problem, and the same issues resurface after a few weeks. Bryce explains the “do’s” and “don’ts” of the swing to his clients, using the analogy of completing a jigsaw puzzle—piece by piece until the puzzle is complete.

Many believe that a new golf club or set will solve their problems, a notion perpetuated by manufacturers. Bryce emphasises that no club will help if it is being swung improperly. The shaft option, grip size, and lie angle of the club are all important factors.

Distance is another golfing myth for the average club golfer. The score, not the distance, determines the outcome of a competition. Bryce advises club golfers to watch women’s golf on TV, as their distances are similar to those of club golfers, unlike the distances seen on the PGA and DP World tours. High-percentage scoring shots are from 120 metres and closer to the hole, and he questions how much time club golfers spend practicing these shots.

Coaching Options

Bryce prefers to coach outside on the grass whenever possible, as this provides a true reflection of the club’s impact on the ball. The grass area is not perfectly flat, just like the course, making it a real-world experience. Club golfers need to lower their distance expectations based on their physical ability and athleticism and instead focus 65% of their practice on shots from 100 metres or less.

Bryce offers the following coaching options:

  • 30-minute lessons
  • 60-minute lessons
  • 9-hole on-course lessons, which are beneficial for course strategy
  • Beginner clinics (minimum 4, maximum 6 participants), with equipment supplied
  • Junior coaching and clinics
  • Video analysis
